Mozilla Firefox 3.6 Alpha 1 is now available

The first alpha version of Namoroka, the next Firefox release, is now available for download. It’s been only a month since Firefox 3.5 Shiretoko, but the Mozilla team has been working hard.

Unlike the year that passed between Firefox 3 and Firefox 3.5, we expect that this 3.6 release will be released in a small number of months. Our main focus for the 3.6 release will be end-user perceived performance, TraceMonkey and DOM performance and new web developer features.

Christopher Blizzard, at Mozilla Hacks.

Even though this release is only a milestone, it already has a number of important features. As Christopher Blizzard also stated in Mozilla Hacks, the main important features are:

  • The TraceMonkey JavaScript engine is being improved.
  • Improvements to DOM and element layout performance.
  • The compositor, a new feature to handle web content which was removed on Shiretoko’s second beta.
  • Improved support for images, -moz-background-size CSS property, CSS Gradients, multiple background images, the rem unit and image-rendering.
  • The Geolocation feature has now position information that can be readed by the user.

This release is built on Gecko 1.9.2 pre-release. As an alpha version, its meant for testing purposes only, but as it uses an engine that is also in beta, it will probably have a bigger number of bugs.

Namoroka will probably be released by the end of fall, 2009. Looks like we won’t have to wait another year for Firefox 4.0. The Mozilla team is working faster than ever.
